The Mysterious Warren

The Mysterious Warren
A Honey and Owl Story

Owl was sitting alone in a tree wondering when he would next see his best friend Honey, the rabbit.

Suddenly, “Owl, Owl! There you are, I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

An out of breath Honey came hopping through the trees, up to the one Owl was sitting on.

“I’ve just had the most amazing adventure,” said Honey as Owl fluttered down to the leaf strewn forest floor.

“Can I hear about your adventure?” enquired the wise old Owl formally. Honey nodded and began her tale.

“I thought I knew all the warrens in Firtree Forest. Mother and Father told me that there had always been six rabbit tribes, with a warren for each. All of us know this and I have visited them all. So when I fell down into a completely concealed and unfamiliar hole yesterday I thought I must be dreaming.

“As my eyes adjusted to the unusually dark tunnel I realized it was once a warren. I sniffed around and could smell old rabbits but the smells were faint as though rabbits hadn’t been here for years.

“After a while I noticed a thin gold thread, barely discernable on the dirt wall. I decided to follow as staying with the thread to make sure I didn’t get lost. I walked for about two minutes when I felt the corner turn so I turned with it. Light hit my eyes like a bomb there, deep under ground was a treasure trove of gold. There were mountains and heaps of gold. Nuggets and hundreds of coins with a rabbit on one side and a carrot on the other. There was also a machine that looked like a sandwich maker with 2 seal presses on the inside one on the top and one on the bottom and I realized that was how they make coins.

“My family is poor but now, now we would be rich! Or would we I thought. Somehow I didn’t think my family would take the money because they are so honest. They might think taking all these riches would be stealing.

“So what do you think, Owl? Should I tell them about the money and should we take it? Or should we just leave it there?”

Owl thought for a moment.

“ I have never told you this for I thought it would be best forgotten. All rabbits used to mine for gold and there was once a seventh tribe in addition to the six you know now. The gold made the rabbits rich but there were also fights and it made many unhappy. One day tragedy struck, the chieftain of the seventh tribe died suddenly and he had no heir. The rabbits of the seventh tribe started fighting among themselves because they all wanted the gold. Eventually none were left and the warren fell into disuse. The other chieftains agreed that they would not look for the seventh tribe’s gold nor would they mine it. The gold was left alone and finally there was peace among Firtree forest rabbits.” Owl concluded.
“ So, I shouldn’t tell any one about it” Honey decided
“ Correct ” Owl replied
The gold remained there for 100s of years and nobody ever touched it again.
